Semiconductor manufacturing is the economic backbone here — the Southern Taiwan Science Park hosts TSMC fabs that produce virtually all of the world's most advanced AI chips, making Tainan one of the most strategically important industrial zones on the planet. Engineers, process technicians, and supply-chain professionals at TSMC and its suppliers earn well by local standards, often NT$60,000–120,000/month depending on seniority. Outside the tech corridor, the economy runs on tourism, food culture, and small-scale retail. Remote workers and FIRE expats aren't the target demographic, but they fit in quietly.

A one-bedroom in the city center runs around $600/month, and you can find decent places outside the core for $350–450. Street food meals cost $1.50–4, so food budgets are genuinely low. Healthcare is excellent and cheap through Taiwan's National Health Insurance — monthly premiums around $35 for most residents — but enrolling as a foreigner requires an ARC tied to employment, study, or marriage, which is real bureaucratic friction. Mandarin is essential; English fluency drops sharply outside universities and tech campuses. Scooters dominate transport; the HSR connects you to Taipei in 90 minutes.

Summers are brutal — 35°C with humidity that makes it feel worse, running May through October. Winters are genuinely mild, rarely below 15°C, which is the city's best-kept seasonal secret. The food scene is legitimately exceptional: Tainan is considered Taiwan's culinary capital, with oyster omelets, milkfish congee, and shrimp rolls available at 7am from street carts. The expat community is small and skews toward tech workers and academics rather than retirees or nomads. Weekends mean temple festivals, cycling the old city walls, or day-tripping to the Taijiang wetlands. This city suits engineers relocating for TSMC, Taiwan-fluent remote workers, or FIRE seekers who prioritize low costs and deep local culture over expat social infrastructure.
