How this is calculated

Every category is built bottom-up from this place's own average prices, not as a percentage of a total. Day-to-day categories come from the same engine used on city pages. Rent is never multiplied by the lifestyle setting.

Lifestyle multiplies day-to-day costs by 0.8 (frugal), 1.0 (balanced) or 1.6 (expat). A second adult adds 60% of a first adult's daily costs, each child 40%. Utilities scale with the square root of the number of people.

Healthcare uses a flat private-cover assumption per adult; the collection stores no insurance price. Car transport uses fuel plus a fixed allowance for insurance and upkeep.

Excluding rent, day-to-day spending is about $700/mo for this household.

How the calculator works

Each category is priced from the city's own average prices. Rent comes from the stored 1BR, 2BR and 3BR figures. Groceries are built from a monthly staples basket plus the rest of a typical food shop. Dining, entertainment, utilities and transport each roll up their own price lines. The total is then scaled for your household and adjusted by the lifestyle setting, which only touches day-to-day spending, never rent.

When a city does not have enough price data, the calculator falls back to that country's single-person figure and says so. The range widens in that case, because a country average hides the spread between cities.

Data sources and method

Prices are gathered from cost-of-living survey data on a rolling refresh schedule, the same dataset behind our city pages. Every line in the result shows its source and the date it was last updated, so you can see how current it is.

Default destination data last updated: 2026-10-08.

Cost of living questions

How is this cost of living calculator different from others?
Most calculators take a national average and split it into fixed percentages. This one builds the total from a city's own average prices: rent, groceries, dining, utilities, transport and healthcare are each calculated from real price data, then adjusted for your household. You can see every line and where it came from.
Where does the cost data come from?
Prices come from the same survey data used across Rewire Abroad for city pages, refreshed on a rolling schedule. Each line shows its source and the date it was last updated. When a city has no usable price data, the calculator falls back to the country average and widens the range so you can see it is less certain.
What do the frugal, balanced and expat settings change?
They only change day-to-day spending, never rent. Frugal multiplies daily costs by 0.8, balanced by 1.0 and expat by 1.6. Rent is taken straight from the city, because a frugal mindset does not make an apartment cheaper.
Why is the estimate a range instead of one number?
Real budgets vary. The likely figure is your best single estimate; the low and high show a sensible band around it. The band is wider when the calculator has to fall back to a country average, or when the underlying prices are more than a few months old.
Does it include taxes or visa fees?
No. This tool covers living costs only. Tax depends on your income, residency and filing, which is a different calculation. Use the GeoArbitrage planner for income and tax, and the Visa Quiz to see what a destination requires.
