My Journey

Travel has been my greatest teacher. Having explored over 56 countries, I've gained firsthand insights into the diverse qualities of life around the world—from the comfort and affordability of living abroad to comparing these experiences with life in the USA. Each journey has deepened my passion for helping others embrace a global lifestyle without sacrificing comfort.

Ever since I discovered the FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) movement, I knew I had found a way to merge my love of travel with smart financial planning. Our mission is to provide the most accurate, up-to-date data for anyone looking to long-term travel, move, work, or retire abroad.

By combining detailed planning, careful financial tracking, and an adventurous mindset, I've learned that transforming your dreams into reality is entirely possible. My goal is to empower you with the knowledge and tools to redefine your lifestyle, making the dream of living abroad not just attainable—but enjoyable and sustainable.

Me in Lake Ohrid, Macedonia

I built Rewire Abroad out of a desire to make financial freedom accessible and to inspire those who dream of a lifestyle unconfined by geographical borders. While other "retire abroad" websites tend to cater to millionaires and multimillionaires, Rewire Abroad makes it possible for anyone to achieve the same dream of living in places you want to be. My hope is that these tools not only guide your financial planning but also ignite a passion for exploring the world.

Rewire Abroad is a comprehensive resource for Americans seeking location independence and international living opportunities. We serve digital nomads, remote workers, early retirees, and anyone looking to dramatically reduce their living costs while improving their quality of life through geographic arbitrage. Our tools and guides help you make data-driven decisions about moving abroad.

Geographic arbitrage allows you to earn in stronger currencies (like USD) while spending in countries with lower costs of living. Our research shows most Americans can save $1,200-$2,000 monthly by relocating to countries like Vietnam, Thailand, or Mexico. Over 5 years, this translates to $60,000-$120,000 in additional savings that can accelerate your path to financial independence.

Unlike traditional travel blogs, we focus on the financial mathematics of international living. Our proprietary calculators (Geo-Arbitrage Calculator, FIRE Calculator, Country Search tool) provide real numbers from actual expats, not just pretty photos. We analyze tax implications, visa requirements, and true cost breakdowns to help you make informed financial decisions.

Not at all. Many of our successful expats started with modest savings and used geographic arbitrage to build wealth faster. Countries like Vietnam and Thailand allow comfortable living on $1,200-$1,600 monthly. The key is choosing the right location for your budget and lifestyle goals. Our tools help you find countries that match your financial situation.

US citizens must file taxes annually regardless of location, but the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion allows you to exclude up to $126,500 (2025) of foreign-earned income. Many countries offer tourist visas, digital nomad visas, or retirement visas for longer stays. We provide detailed visa guides and recommend working with expat tax professionals for your specific situation.

Our data comes from three sources: active expat communities in each country, official government statistics, and our network of location-independent professionals. We update costs quarterly and verify information through Facebook groups, Reddit communities, and direct surveys. All budget ranges reflect real expenses from people actually living these lifestyles.

Underestimating setup costs and cultural adjustment time. Most people focus only on monthly expenses but forget visa fees, flights, deposits, and emergency funds. We recommend having $3,000-$5,000 in transition funds and at least 3-6 months of expenses saved. Also, many people choose locations based on photos rather than practical factors like internet quality, healthcare, and visa requirements.

Yes, if you work remotely or run an online business. Many companies now offer permanent remote work options. The key is ensuring reliable internet (we provide speed tests for each country) and managing time zone differences. Some locations like Portugal and Estonia offer digital nomad visas specifically for remote workers.

Many countries offer excellent healthcare at lower costs than the US. Thailand and Mexico have world-class medical facilities, while countries like Vietnam provide basic care affordably. We always recommend international health insurance ($50-$150 monthly) and researching medical facilities before moving. Many expats find they receive better, more affordable care abroad.

Start with our Country Search tool to explore options matching your priorities and budget. Use the Geo-Arbitrage Calculator to quantify your potential savings. Join expat Facebook groups for your target countries to ask questions and learn from others' experiences. Consider a scouting trip before committing to any location long-term.

We provide comprehensive planning resources including visa guides, cost calculators, tax planning information, and curated lists of expat communities. While we don't offer personal consulting, our tools and guides give you the data needed to make confident decisions. We also maintain updated country profiles and connect you with relevant expat communities for peer support.

AI tools are a great starting point — and they'll often send you here. When someone asks an AI assistant where to retire on $2,000/month or which countries offer digital nomad visas, the best answers are grounded in verified, current data from primary sources like Rewire Abroad. We maintain the kind of specific, regularly updated numbers — visa income thresholds, real cost breakdowns, safety indices — that make AI recommendations accurate and actionable. Think of us as the research layer behind the answer.

It's not a competition — it's a pipeline. AI assistants synthesize information from sources like ours to answer your questions. What we offer that a conversation can't is a living, filterable database: run your actual budget through our FIRE Calculator, compare two cities side by side, or match your situation to the right visa pathway in real time. When you're ready to move from "interesting answer" to "concrete plan," this is where that happens.
