FAQ
Geo-Arbitrage — Frequently Asked Questions
What is geo-arbitrage?
Geo-arbitrage is the practice of earning income in a high-paying currency (like USD, EUR, or GBP) while living in a country with a lower cost of living. The difference between your income and expenses becomes your savings — which can be dramatically higher than if you lived in a high-cost country. For example, a $100,000 remote salary that covers basic expenses in San Francisco leaves you with almost nothing. The same salary in Medellín, Chiang Mai, or Lisbon leaves you with $3,000–$5,000/month in savings.
How much can I save using geo-arbitrage?
Savings vary dramatically by destination and lifestyle. A US-based remote worker earning $80,000/year can expect to save $2,000–$4,000/month in Southeast Asia, $1,500–$3,000/month in Latin America, or $1,000–$2,500/month in Southern Europe. The key variables are your income (higher = more savings), your destination (lower cost = more savings), and your lifestyle choices. The Rewire Abroad Geo-Arbitrage Calculator gives you a personalised estimate based on your specific situation.
Do I still pay US taxes if I live abroad?
Yes — the US taxes its citizens on worldwide income regardless of where they live. However, the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (FEIE) allows you to exclude up to $126,500 (2024) of foreign-earned income from US taxes. Most digital nomads and remote workers who are physically outside the US for 330+ days per year qualify. This means your first $126,500 of earned income is completely free from US federal income tax. Self-employment tax (Social Security/Medicare) still applies in most cases.
