Ladismith sits in the Klein Karoo, roughly 300km east of Cape Town, and its economy runs almost entirely on agriculture — ostrich farming, fruit orchards, and dairy are the backbone here. The Ladismith Cheese factory is the town's most recognizable employer and something of a regional institution. There's no meaningful remote-work infrastructure, no tech sector, and no tourism industry worth mentioning beyond passing Garden Route travelers. If you're not farming, running a small business serving locals, or working remotely with income from elsewhere, earning a living here is genuinely difficult.

The Klein Karoo climate means hot, dry summers pushing 40°C and mild winters — almost no rain year-round, which is the opposite of Cape Town's pattern. The Swartberg mountains are genuinely spectacular and hiking, cycling, and stargazing fill weekends for people who embrace the isolation. The expat community is tiny to nonexistent; this is a small Afrikaner farming town of a few thousand people, not a cosmopolitan hub. Ladismith suits self-sufficient remote workers or early retirees who specifically want rural Southern African life, dramatic landscapes, and low costs — and have no need for urban amenities.
