Finance dominates Zurich's economy—UBS, Credit Suisse, and dozens of asset managers employ thousands—but pharma, biotech, and engineering are equally serious. If you're in fintech, wealth management, or tech, the job market is competitive but real; salaries are high enough to justify the cost of living. Outside those sectors, work visas get harder. Most expats here either transferred internally or landed a role before arriving.

Rent for a one-bedroom in the city center runs $2,550/month; a modest apartment in Kreis 10 (outer district) might hit $1,800. Public transport is excellent and expensive—a monthly pass costs $110. Healthcare is mandatory and good but pricey; expect $300–500/month for basic insurance. German is the local language; English works in finance and tech, but daily life (shops, bureaucracy, landlords) assumes you speak it. Residency permits require a job offer and employer sponsorship—straightforward but non-negotiable.

Winters are gray and cold (0–2°C); summers mild (17–19°C). Food is excellent but costly; a grocery bill for two runs $400–500/month. The expat community is large and transient—lots of finance people, some burnout. Weekends mean hiking in the Alps (30 minutes by train), lakeside walks, or expensive restaurants. Zurich suits high earners in finance or tech who value safety, efficiency, and outdoor access over affordability or spontaneity.
