The rose and perfume industry is genuinely distinctive — attar production here isn't a boutique novelty but a functioning traditional economy with established workshops and export trade. Grapes, pomegranates, and honey add agricultural weight. Most formal employment, however, flows through public sector jobs, healthcare, and the education sector. Private sector work for expats is limited and typically tied to construction, hospitality, or Vision 2030-linked development projects.

A one-bedroom in the city center runs around $450/month, which is reasonable by Saudi standards, though housing quality varies significantly by neighborhood. Getting around without a car is genuinely difficult — public transport is minimal and ride-hailing apps are the practical fallback. Healthcare access is adequate through government hospitals and a handful of private clinics, though complex cases get referred to Jeddah or Riyadh. Arabic is essential here; English fluency among locals is lower than in Riyadh or Jeddah. Bureaucracy follows standard Saudi patterns: residency (Iqama) processing is slow, and most administrative tasks require a Saudi sponsor.

The climate is the main selling point — summers stay around 25–30°C while the rest of the peninsula bakes above 45°C, and winters are genuinely cool, occasionally dropping near freezing at night. Weekends involve the rose souqs, mountain drives on Highway 15 toward Al-Hada, and the historic Souq Okaz area. Food is traditional Hejazi — grilled meats, flatbreads, local honey — with limited international dining options compared to major Saudi cities. The expat community is small and mostly tied to specific employers rather than a self-sustaining social scene. This city suits expats who want a quieter, cooler Saudi posting and don't need a cosmopolitan social infrastructure to feel at home.
