Port operations drive everything here — Maputo's deep-water bay handles the bulk of Mozambique's trade, and that creates a specific economic ecosystem: logistics companies, freight forwarders, customs brokers, and the multinationals that depend on them. The manufacturing and services sectors have grown around this core, and international NGOs, development banks, and extractive industry firms (natural gas is a big deal in Mozambique right now) employ a significant share of the expat workforce. Remote workers exist here but are a small minority — this is primarily a city where people come on assignment, not to freelance from a café.

A one-bedroom in the city center runs around $800/month, which is high by regional standards and reflects demand from the diplomatic and NGO crowd — you can do better in outer neighborhoods but infrastructure quality drops noticeably. Healthcare is a real concern: public hospitals are underfunded and most expats use private clinics like Clínica de Sommerschield or fly to South Africa for anything serious. Portuguese is the official language and English penetration is limited outside business circles, so basic Portuguese is genuinely necessary, not optional. Bureaucracy for visas and residency permits is slow and inconsistently applied — budget time and patience.

The climate is warm year-round with a rainy season from November to March that brings humidity and occasional flooding in low-lying areas. The food scene punches above its weight — piri piri prawns and matapa are legitimately excellent, and the restaurant strip along Avenida Julius Nyerere has solid options. The expat community is real but concentrated: diplomats, aid workers, and energy sector employees who tend to socialize within their own orbits. Weekends mean beach trips to Inhaca Island or the Machangulo Peninsula. This city suits people on structured international assignments who want an authentic African capital experience without the chaos of Lagos or Nairobi.
