Steel, ships, and pharmaceuticals drive the economy here — Hindustan Shipyard, the Naval Dockyard, and Visakhapatnam Port collectively employ tens of thousands and anchor the city's industrial identity. Beyond heavy industry, a growing pharma and biotech corridor has attracted serious investment, and an emerging IT and fintech sector means remote workers and tech professionals aren't completely out of place. That said, the white-collar job market is thinner than Hyderabad or Bengaluru — most expats working locally are in maritime, defense contracting, or academic roles tied to IIM or the Indian Maritime University.

A one-bedroom in the city center runs around $300/month, and you can do meaningfully better outside the center. Auto-rickshaws and app-based cabs handle daily transport adequately, though traffic congestion is real and public transit is limited. Healthcare access is reasonable — KIMS and Seven Hills Hospital cover most needs, but specialist care for complex conditions may require travel to Hyderabad. Telugu is the dominant language and English fluency outside professional and academic circles is inconsistent, which creates genuine friction for daily errands. Bureaucratic processes — visas, registrations, utility setups — follow India's standard slow-moving playbook.

Summers are punishing, regularly hitting 40°C with high humidity from the Bay of Bengal, but October through February is genuinely pleasant. The coastline is the city's best asset — Rushikonda and RK Beach are accessible and uncrowded by Indian metro standards. Food is Telugu-heavy, seafood is excellent and cheap, and the restaurant scene is improving but not cosmopolitan. The expat community is small and largely tied to naval or industrial postings rather than lifestyle migration. Weekends mean beaches, the Araku Valley hill drive, or Buddhist ruins at Thotlakonda. This city suits people on defense or maritime contracts, academics, or FIRE-seekers who want low costs and coastal access without needing a large expat social infrastructure.
