India's financial engine runs through this city — the Bombay Stock Exchange, Reserve Bank of India, and headquarters of HDFC, Tata, and Reliance all call Mumbai home. Finance, maritime trade (70% of India's total passes through here), and Bollywood collectively dominate the economy. Tech and consulting firms cluster in Bandra-Kurla Complex and Powai. For expats, roles typically come through multinational transfers or remote work — walking in cold and landing a local-salary job is genuinely difficult, and local pay scales won't impress anyone used to Western compensation.

A one-bedroom in the city center runs around $1,200/month, which sounds manageable until you realize that buys you something small in a building that may have seen better days. Bandra and Lower Parel are the expat-friendly neighborhoods; both carry a premium. The suburban rail network is extensive but crushingly overcrowded during peak hours. Private healthcare at Kokilaben or Breach Candy Hospital is solid and far cheaper than Western equivalents. The language barrier is real outside business contexts — English works in offices and upscale areas, but Hindi or Marathi helps everywhere else. Bureaucracy for visas and residency registration is slow and document-heavy; budget weeks, not days.

Monsoon season from June to September means serious flooding — the 2005 floods killed over 1,000 people, and infrastructure hasn't fully caught up. Outside monsoon, the heat and humidity are relentless. The food scene is genuinely exceptional: street vada pav, Irani cafés, and high-end coastal seafood restaurants coexist at every price point. There's a sizable expat community concentrated in Bandra West, with regular meetups and a functioning social scene. Weekends mean Marine Drive walks, day trips to Elephanta Island, or escaping to Lonavala. Mumbai suits expats on corporate assignments or remote workers who want maximum urban intensity and can tolerate real logistical friction in exchange for it.
