Trading and commerce drive Cuttack's economy more than any single employer. The city functions as Odisha's commercial backbone — wholesale markets, textile dealers, and food processing operations dominate the business landscape. The Orissa High Court and associated state government offices create steady demand for legal professionals and civil servants. Silver filigree craftsmanship is a genuine cottage industry here, not just a tourist talking point, employing thousands of artisans. Remote workers and digital nomads will find the infrastructure thin — reliable coworking spaces are essentially nonexistent, and power cuts remain a real consideration.

A one-bedroom in the city center runs around $190/month, and you can eat well on $150–200/month if you cook locally and eat at dhabas. Auto-rickshaws and cycle-rickshaws handle most short trips cheaply, but the road network is congested and flooding during monsoon (June–September) regularly disrupts movement. Healthcare is available through government hospitals and a handful of private clinics, but serious conditions typically send people to Bhubaneswar, 30 km away. Odia is the dominant language; English works in government offices and with educated professionals, but daily life requires at least basic Odia or Hindi.

Summers are brutal — temperatures regularly hit 40°C (104°F) with high humidity before the monsoon breaks. Winters from November to February are genuinely pleasant, around 15–25°C. The food scene is a legitimate draw: Cuttack's street food, particularly dahi bara aloo dum and chhena poda, is some of the best in Odisha. The Durga Puja celebrations here are among the largest in eastern India and worth experiencing once. The expat community is essentially zero — this is not a city with international social infrastructure. Cuttack suits someone already embedded in India, perhaps through marriage or heritage, who wants low costs and authentic Odia culture without any expat bubble.
