Manufacturing and agriculture dominate the local economy here in Sichuan Province, with chemical production, food processing, and coal-related industries providing most formal employment. Ziyang sits in a lower-income tier even by inland Chinese standards — GDP per capita runs well below Chengdu's, roughly 60km to the northwest. Remote workers and digital nomads can technically operate here, but there's no tech ecosystem, no co-working infrastructure, and essentially no English-language professional network. This is a working Chinese city where locals work in factories, farms, and small trade, not a place you build a startup.

A decent two-bedroom apartment runs ¥1,200–¥1,800/month ($165–$250), making it genuinely cheap even by Chinese inland standards. Local food costs almost nothing — ¥15–25 per meal at restaurants. High-speed rail connects Ziyang to Chengdu in under 30 minutes, which matters because Ziyang's own hospital infrastructure is limited; serious medical care means going to Chengdu. The language barrier is severe and unforgiving — English is essentially nonexistent outside of any context you can imagine. Bureaucracy for foreign residents follows standard Chinese visa rules, but local officials here have minimal experience processing foreigners.

Sichuan climate means hot, humid summers and mild but grey winters, with persistent overcast skies much of the year. The food is legitimately excellent — proper Sichuan cuisine at street-level prices, not tourist-adjusted versions. Weekends mean hiking nearby countryside, day-tripping to Chengdu for anything cosmopolitan, or sitting in teahouses. The expat community is effectively zero — you will not find a community here, a Facebook group, or a familiar face at a bar. This city suits one narrow profile: a Mandarin-fluent person pursuing extreme cost-of-living reduction who treats Chengdu as their actual social and professional hub.
