Remote workers exist here but aren't the dominant expat archetype — this is a working city.

A one-bedroom in the city center runs around $300/month, which is genuinely low, but factor in the friction: bureaucracy for long-stay visas is real and India's e-Visa doesn't allow indefinite renewals, so visa runs or an agent become part of life. Malayalam is the local language and English proficiency varies sharply — fine in offices and malls, inconsistent elsewhere. Healthcare is solid by Indian standards; Amrita and Aster Medcity hospitals are nearby. Auto-rickshaws and the Kochi Metro handle daily transport cheaply, but monsoon flooding regularly disrupts roads June through September.

Three thousand millimeters of annual rainfall is not a minor detail — from June to September, Ernakulam is genuinely wet, humid, and occasionally flooded. Outside monsoon, temperatures sit between 20–33°C, which is manageable. The food scene is excellent if you eat seafood; Kerala cuisine is distinct and cheap at local joints. The expat community is small and mostly tied to business or NGO work, not lifestyle migration. Weekends mean backwater day trips, Fort Kochi's cafes, or the beach at Cherai. This city suits location-independent professionals who want low costs, real urban infrastructure, and don't mind monsoon chaos.
