Hair is the economy here — literally. Xuchang supplies a staggering share of the world's wigs, weaves, and hair extensions, with exports hitting roughly $1 billion as far back as 2016, and the industry has only grown since. Hundreds of factories and trading companies cluster around this supply chain, from raw hair processing to finished product export. Tobacco manufacturing adds a second industrial pillar. For locals, factory work and trade dominate employment. For foreign professionals, opportunities are narrow — think sourcing agents, quality control roles, or English teachers at Xuchang University.

A one-bedroom in the city center runs around $116/month, which is genuinely cheap even by Chinese standards. Local food and transport cost almost nothing. The friction is elsewhere: Xuchang has essentially no expat infrastructure, meaning hospital signage, government forms, and daily commerce operate entirely in Mandarin with zero English fallback. Healthcare exists but expect a public hospital system where navigating without fluent Chinese or a local contact is genuinely difficult. Registering residence, opening bank accounts, and handling any bureaucracy requires either strong Mandarin or a patient local ally.

Summers are hot and humid — July averages around 27°C with heavy rain concentrated May through September. Winters are dry and cold but manageable. The food scene runs on Henan staples: noodles, flatbreads, braised meat, all cheap and good. Weekend options are limited to parks, local markets, and day trips to Zhengzhou or Kaifeng, both under an hour away. The expat community is effectively nonexistent as a social structure. This city suits one specific profile: someone working directly in the hair trade who wants rock-bottom costs and doesn't need an English-speaking social life.
