Education, defense, and government research dominate the economy here — the Indian Military Academy, Forest Research Institute, and Indian Institute of Remote Sensing are the city's real anchors, employing thousands in stable, largely government-backed roles. Private-sector job growth exists in real estate, hospitality, and tourism services feeding the Himalayan pilgrimage and trekking circuit, but it's thin. Remote workers and digital nomads can function here, but don't expect a startup ecosystem or significant English-language corporate hiring. Basmati rice and bakery exports add agricultural weight, but those aren't sectors expats typically enter.

A one-bedroom in the city center runs around $350/month — reasonable by any standard, and noticeably cheaper than Delhi or Bengaluru. Local transport is a patchwork of shared autos, e-rickshaws, and app-based cabs; owning a scooter makes life significantly easier. Jolly Grant Airport is 25 km out and has limited direct routes, so travel often routes through Delhi. Hindi is essential — English gets you through tourist areas and institutions, but daily errands, landlord negotiations, and government offices will test you without it. Bureaucracy for visa extensions and residency paperwork is genuinely slow and document-heavy.

The climate is the headline draw: mild winters around 10–15°C and summers that stay manageable at 25–30°C, a genuine relief from the plains. Weekends mean day trips to Mussoorie, Rishikesh, or Haridwar — all within two hours. Food is predominantly North Indian, with a decent bakery culture that's locally famous. The expat community is small and skews toward long-term researchers, retired military families, and a handful of remote workers; don't expect a ready-made social network. This city suits people who want Himalayan access, low costs, and genuine quiet — not those who need urban energy or career networking.
