Tourism runs this city — full stop. The Old Town (Dayan) pulls millions of domestic Chinese tourists annually, and nearly every business in the historic core exists to serve them: guesthouses, souvenir shops, Naxi cultural performances, and restaurants charging Kunming prices for local dishes. Hydropower infrastructure provides industrial employment, but that's largely state-sector work inaccessible to foreign residents. Remote workers and digital nomads can function here, but the local job market for foreigners is thin — English teaching is the realistic option, and even that is limited compared to Kunming or Chengdu.

A decent apartment outside the Old Town runs ¥1,500–2,500/month ($210–350), but anything inside the heritage zone costs significantly more and often comes with noise from tourist foot traffic until midnight. Healthcare is a real concern: Lijiang's hospitals are adequate for minor issues, but serious conditions require evacuation to Kunming, a 5–6 hour drive or short flight away. Mandarin is essential — English penetration is low outside tourist-facing businesses. Bureaucracy for long-term residence follows standard Chinese visa rules, which means regular renewals and limited visa pathways unless you're employed or married to a Chinese national.

At 2,400 meters, the climate is genuinely pleasant — cool summers around 20°C, mild winters rarely dropping below freezing in town, and roughly 300 sunny days per year. The altitude hits some people hard for the first few days. Food is good and cheap if you eat where locals eat: a bowl of Yunnan rice noodles costs ¥10–15. The expat community is small and transient — mostly backpackers passing through and a handful of long-termers running guesthouses. Weekends mean hiking Tiger Leaping Gorge, cycling to Lashihai Lake, or escaping the tourist crowds entirely. This city suits FIRE retirees or slow travelers who want dramatic mountain scenery and low costs, and can tolerate minimal English infrastructure and a social scene built almost entirely around Chinese domestic tourism.
