Manufacturing is the entire economy here — footwear and apparel, specifically. Jinjiang produces shoes for Nike, Adidas, and dozens of other international brands, and the industrial parks along the coast are enormous. The city ranks first in GDP among all county-level cities in Fujian Province for 15+ consecutive years and sits in China's top 10 richest counties. Most employment is factory-floor or factory-adjacent: logistics, supply chain, quality control, and trade. Remote workers and digital nomads exist here, but they're anomalies — this city runs on manufacturing contracts, not laptops.

A decent one-bedroom apartment runs roughly ¥1,500–2,500/month ($210–350 USD), though newer units near the airport or commercial districts push higher. Local food is cheap — ¥15–30 per meal at street stalls. Mandarin works in most formal settings, but Hokkien (Minnan dialect) dominates daily life, which creates a real communication layer even for Mandarin-fluent expats. Healthcare is functional at city hospitals but limited in English-language support. Bureaucracy for foreign residents follows standard Chinese visa and residence permit processes — expect paperwork, in-person appointments, and patience.

Summers are hot and humid with typhoon risk from June through September; winters are mild, rarely dropping below 10°C. The food scene leans heavily on Fujian coastal cuisine — seafood, oyster omelets, and beef soup are genuinely excellent and cheap. The expat community is small and mostly tied to trade or manufacturing oversight roles; this isn't a city with international bars or a digital nomad café circuit. Weekends mean day trips to Quanzhou's historic old town (30 minutes away) or the coast. Jinjiang suits manufacturing professionals, sourcing agents, and overseas Chinese with family roots here — almost no one else.
