Manufacturing runs this city. Maquiladoras — foreign-owned assembly plants producing automotive parts, electronics, and consumer goods for U.S. markets — are the dominant employer, with companies like Honeywell, Rockwell Collins, and dozens of smaller suppliers operating here. Agriculture in the surrounding Imperial Valley adds another economic layer, though most field work is low-wage. For expats, the realistic opportunities are in plant management, engineering, logistics, and cross-border supply chain roles. Remote workers with USD income are increasingly showing up, drawn by proximity to California without California prices.

A one-bedroom in the city center runs around $500/month, and you can find decent places outside the center for $300–$380. Healthcare is functional — Hospital Almater and IMSS facilities handle most needs, and Tijuana is three hours away for specialists. Spanish is non-negotiable; English penetration is thin outside border-adjacent business contexts. The border crossing into Calexico is genuinely convenient for Costco runs and U.S. banking, but wait times can hit 90 minutes during peak hours. Bureaucracy for residency follows standard Mexican processes — slow but manageable with a local gestor.

Summer is the real test. Forty-five degrees Celsius is not a figure of speech — it happens regularly from June through September, and outdoor life essentially stops midday for months. Winters are genuinely pleasant, hovering around 18–22°C, and that's when the city earns its keep. The Chinese-Mexican food scene is legitimately interesting, a legacy of early 1900s immigration, and tacos are reliably excellent and cheap. The expat community is small and skews toward manufacturing professionals rather than retirees or nomads. This city suits engineers, supply chain managers, or remote workers who want U.S. border access and low costs and can tolerate brutal summers.
