Carbonia, ItalyCapital City
With a population of just 26,250, Carbonia is a rather small and insular city, even by Italian standards. The town was founded in the 1930s by Mussolini to house coal miners, and that industrial heritage still looms large - unemployment remains high after the mines closed in the 1970s. Bureaucracy is a persistent headache, and the climate can be harsh, with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters.
This economically-depressed former mining town is likely not the best fit for the average expat. Those drawn to Italy's vibrant culture and natural beauty would be better served exploring other parts of the country. Carbonia is an isolated outpost, better suited for die-hard industrial archaeology enthusiasts than the casual tourist or retiree.
