Acqualagna PU, Italy
Living in this small Italian truffle town means embracing a slower-paced lifestyle that revolves heavily around the prized fungus industry. With just 4,151 residents spread across 50.8 square kilometers, it's a decidedly intimate community where everyone knows your business.
This ancient settlement, originally called Aqua Lanea ("Water Slaughter"), earned its name from the bloody 552 AD battle between Ostrogoth and Byzantine forces. After the Roman town of Pitinum Mergens was destroyed by Alarich I, survivors established Montefalcone castle, which evolved into modern Acqualagna. The town gained brief international notoriety in 1901 when infamous murderer Giuseppe Musolino was captured here after a two-year manhunt. Today, locals are more focused on fungi than fugitives - Acqualagna stands as one of Italy's premier truffle centers, with the 2,000-year-old Furlo Gorge and its Roman tunnel serving as the most dramatic local landmark.
