Unnao, India

📊 Scores
If you need to be here for work, you almost certainly already know it. Unnao's economy runs on leather tanning, industrial manufacturing, and a scattering of agricultural processing. The tanneries dominate everything. You can smell them before you see them. Remote work is technically possible, with internet speeds crawling along at 25 Mbps on a good day, but the bigger problem is power. Load-shedding cuts your connection multiple times daily and UPS backups are not a luxury, they are the price of entry. Nobody is coming here to find a job. The multinationals don't operate offices in Unnao and the local industrial base has zero use for foreign hires. If you are working remotely for a company elsewhere and just happen to sleep in Unnao, you can make it work, barely. If you need local income, this is not your town.
Nobody will hold your hand through the bureaucracy. Renting an apartment means cash deposits, handshake agreements in Hindi, and landlords who have never rented to a foreigner and will be visibly confused about why you want to live here. Healthcare is the real dealbreaker if you have any chronic conditions. The district hospital is understaffed and undersupplied. For anything beyond basic stitches or a fever, you are looking at a 90-minute drive to Lucknow or Kanpur, assuming you have a car, which you will need, because public transport is shared auto-rickshaws and fading buses that don't run on schedule. Hindi is not optional. English evaporates fast once you leave the main intersections. You will be stared at constantly. Not aggressively, not maliciously, but with a curiosity that never seems to tire itself out, and after six months that wears on you in ways you won't anticipate.
You come here if you have a specific, unavoidable reason. Maybe your spouse is from here. Maybe your company sent you to audit one of the tanneries and the assignment lasts eighteen months. For the determined retiree seeking extreme solitude on a shoestring, the math technically works, but loneliness is the cost you cannot calculate in advance. Digital nomads should strike this off their list entirely. There is no coworking scene, no expat community to speak of, and the nearest airport with any meaningful connections is Lucknow, which is close in kilometers but feels distant when you are dragging luggage through traffic that obeys no logic you were ever taught. If you want small-town India with some infrastructure for outsiders, look at places with a university or a tourism footprint. Unnao is neither of those things. It is a working town. It does not care if you stay. That honesty is its only real welcome.

🛡️ Safety & Crime
(Higher is safer)
(Lower is safer)
Unnao presents moderate safety challenges typical of smaller Indian industrial cities. While violent crime against foreigners is uncommon, petty theft, scams targeting expats, and occasional communal tensions warrant caution. Avoid displaying wealth, use registered taxis or apps like Uber, and stay alert in crowded markets and bus stations. The city lacks the infrastructure and expat support networks of major metros like Delhi or Bangalore, making it less ideal for first-time India expats. Verdict: Suitable only for experienced expat residents comfortable with Indian urban realities and willing to take standard precautions.
