Living in this battle-scarred Mediterranean outpost means accepting significant security risks, with recent terrorist activity and a complex military history shadowing daily life. The capital of Egypt's North Sinai hosts 164,830 residents at the mouth of Wadi al-Arish, 344km northeast of Cairo and 45km from Gaza.

This strategic coastal city has been a focal point of regional conflicts for decades, changing hands multiple times during Arab-Israeli wars and more recently grappling with Islamic State activity. Despite these challenges, it maintains Egypt's only deep-water port in Sinai, handling ships up to 30,000 tonnes and exporting cement, sand, salt and marble. The city's infrastructure includes an international airport and the Northern Coastal Highway, though the Cairo railway connection remains incomplete beyond Bir al-Abed.

Recent developments have seen Arish emerge as a crucial humanitarian corridor during Gaza conflicts, with its port and surrounding desert areas serving as staging grounds for relief efforts and field hospitals.
