Foreign professionals here are almost exclusively in B2B roles: sourcing agents, quality control managers, or engineers embedded in supply chains. Remote workers exist but are rare enough to feel isolated. The Xiamen-Zhangzhou metro corridor creates real economic density, and proximity to Taiwan shapes both investment patterns and hiring in tech-adjacent manufacturing.

A decent two-bedroom apartment runs ¥2,000–3,500/month ($275–480), well below Xiamen prices just 40 kilometers away. Local food is cheap — ¥15–25 per meal at non-tourist spots. Public transit exists but is limited compared to tier-1 cities; most expats use DiDi or a scooter. Mandarin gets you by, but the local Hokkien dialect dominates daily life and can create unexpected friction. Healthcare at public hospitals is affordable but English-speaking staff are scarce — serious medical issues mean a trip to Xiamen. Visa and residence permit bureaucracy follows standard China rules: functional but paperwork-heavy.

Summers are long, humid, and genuinely hot from May through September; winters are mild and damp rather than cold. The food scene is a legitimate draw — Fujian cuisine here is the real thing, with seafood, peanut-based sauces, and dishes you won't find replicated elsewhere. The expat community is small and mostly industry-linked, so social life outside work requires effort and Mandarin. Weekends mean day trips to Xiamen, coastal hiking, or exploring the nearby Tulou earthen roundhouses. This city suits manufacturing professionals or sourcing specialists who want low costs and don't need a large expat social infrastructure.
