A two-bedroom apartment runs roughly ¥3,000–5,000/month ($420–700), significantly cheaper than nearby Shanghai or Suzhou. The German business community has created a small but functional expat infrastructure — German-language kindergartens, a German club, and some Western-friendly services exist. That said, English is minimally useful outside the German business bubble; Mandarin is essential for daily life and any bureaucratic dealings. Healthcare is adequate at city-level hospitals, but serious medical needs will send you to Shanghai, 60km away. High-speed rail and expressways make that commute manageable at roughly 40–50 minutes.

Four distinct seasons mean hot, humid summers peaking around 35°C and cold, damp winters that feel worse than the numbers suggest. The food scene is solid Jiangnan cuisine — hairy crab in autumn is genuinely worth the trip — but international dining options are thin outside German-oriented spots. The expat community is small and predominantly German, which creates tight social cohesion if you're in that world and near-total isolation if you're not. Weekends mean Shanghai day trips, the Yangtze riverfront, or Adventure Park. Taicang suits German-speaking manufacturing professionals on assignment who want lower costs than Shanghai without fully sacrificing European familiarity.
