Coal and mineral extraction built this city and still dominate it. The economy runs on mining, quarrying, and downstream heavy industry — coal, iron ore, kaolin, limestone, granite. With a 2020 GDP of 96.36 billion RMB and urban per capita disposable income around 40,405 RMB (roughly $5,600/year), this is a working-class industrial economy, not a tech hub or services center. Remote workers and digital nomads can technically operate here, but there's no ecosystem supporting them — no co-working spaces, no startup culture, no multinational employers.

A one-bedroom apartment in the urban core runs roughly 1,200–1,800 RMB/month ($165–$250), making it genuinely cheap to live here. Local food and transport are similarly low-cost. The language barrier is severe — English is functionally nonexistent outside of any school context, and navigating healthcare, banking, or residency registration requires either fluent Mandarin or a patient local contact. Healthcare infrastructure is adequate for routine needs but limited for complex cases; Changsha, 110 km away, is your realistic option for serious medical situations.

Summers are long, hot, and humid — 18°C annual average sounds mild, but July and August are punishing with high rainfall. Winters are short and damp rather than cold. The food scene is Jiangxi-style with heavy Hunanese influence: spicy, cheap, and genuinely good if you like heat. The expat community is essentially zero — this is not a city where foreigners settle by choice. Revolutionary heritage tourism (Anyuan miners' sites, Autumn Harvest Uprising locations) gives weekends some cultural texture, but nightlife and international social life don't exist here. This city suits someone with deep roots in the region, a Chinese-speaking partner, or a very specific research or industrial reason to be here.
