Beyond that, Mianyang has built a legitimate electronics and high-tech manufacturing base, with companies like Changhong (one of China's largest TV manufacturers) headquartered here. For foreign workers, the job market is narrow: English teaching is the realistic entry point, with monthly salaries around ¥10,000–15,000 ($1,400–2,100). Skilled tech roles exist but typically require Mandarin fluency and Chinese employer sponsorship.

A one-bedroom apartment in a decent urban neighborhood runs ¥1,500–2,500/month ($210–350), and a two-bedroom rarely exceeds ¥3,500 ($490). Local food is cheap — a sit-down meal costs ¥15–30 ($2–4). Public buses cover the city adequately; taxis and DiDi are inexpensive. Healthcare at major hospitals like Mianyang Central Hospital is functional but almost entirely Mandarin-only — bring a translator for anything beyond basic care. The language barrier is genuinely high: English signage is sparse, and daily life without at least intermediate Mandarin is a constant friction point. Summers are hot and muggy with persistent rain from May through September — not brutal, but not comfortable either. Winters are mild and grey rather than cold. The food scene is legitimately excellent: Mianyang is in Sichuan, so the mala flavors are real and cheap. Weekends mean hiking in the surrounding hills, day trips to Jiuzhaigou or Chengdu (90 minutes by expressway), and local hotpot. The expat community is small — likely a few hundred at most, concentrated around teaching jobs — so don't expect a ready-made social network. This city suits a Mandarin-speaking professional or adventurous teacher who wants low costs and authentic Chinese city life without the expat bubble of Beijing or Shanghai.
