Remote workers and digital nomads will find almost no English-language professional infrastructure; this is a working Chinese city, not an expat employment hub.

Rent is genuinely cheap — expect to pay ¥1,500–2,500/month ($210–350) for a decent two-bedroom apartment. Local food costs are low, with street meals under ¥15. Healthcare exists at the city and county hospital level, but specialist care means a trip to Xuzhou, about 90 minutes away. Mandarin is non-negotiable; English signage is rare and locals have minimal exposure to foreign languages. Bureaucratic processes for residence registration and visa renewals require patience and ideally a Chinese-speaking intermediary.

Four distinct seasons mean hot, humid summers pushing 35°C and cold winters with occasional snow — not the mild year-round climate many expats seek.
