Science and technology drive Hefei's economy in a way that's unusual for a Chinese city of its size. The University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) anchors a research ecosystem that includes the EAST fusion reactor and dozens of state-backed labs, making this one of China's most serious science cities. High-tech manufacturing — semiconductors, display panels, EVs, and AI hardware — has attracted major employers including BOE Technology and NIO's research operations. Foreign professionals here are almost exclusively researchers, academics, or engineers embedded in joint ventures. There is no meaningful freelance or remote-work expat economy.

A one-bedroom in the city center averages around $177/month, which is genuinely low even by Chinese standards — roughly a third of Shanghai prices. High-speed rail connects Hefei to Shanghai in under two hours and Beijing in about three, which matters when you need consular services or international flights. Public transit is functional but not extensive outside the core. Healthcare at top hospitals is competent but heavily Chinese-language-dependent; bring a local colleague or hire a medical interpreter for anything serious. Bureaucracy for residence permits follows standard Chinese procedures — expect paperwork, in-person visits, and limited English support at government offices.

Summers are brutally hot and humid, pushing 38°C regularly; winters are damp and cold without the heating infrastructure of northern China, so apartments can feel raw from December through February. The food scene is solid Anhui cuisine — braised meats, preserved vegetables, strong flavors — with enough variety in the university districts to eat well cheaply. The expat community is small and skews heavily academic; social life tends to orbit USTC or research institute events rather than bar districts. Weekends mean day trips to Chaohu Lake, local museums, or the high-speed rail to Nanjing or Shanghai. Hefei suits researchers, STEM academics, and engineers on assignment who want low costs and don't need an international social scene.
