Diversification into logistics and light manufacturing is happening, but slowly. For expats, legitimate work options are narrow — English teaching at schools or training centers is the realistic path, with salaries typically ranging from ¥8,000–¥14,000/month depending on qualifications and employer.

A decent two-bedroom apartment runs ¥1,500–¥2,500/month ($210–$350), and daily expenses are genuinely low — meals at local restaurants cost ¥15–¥30. High-speed rail connects Handan to Beijing in under two hours and to Zhengzhou quickly, which matters when you need a major city's international hospital or embassy. Local healthcare is functional but Mandarin-only; without solid Chinese language skills, navigating clinics is painful. Bureaucracy for residence permits and work visas requires patience and a compliant employer — expect paperwork delays and limited English-language support from local authorities.

Winters are cold and dry, summers are hot and hazy, and air quality is a real concern given the industrial base — check the AQI before committing. Food is northern Chinese: hand-pulled noodles, lamb skewers, braised pork, all cheap and good. The expat community is tiny — think dozens, not thousands — so social life defaults to Chinese colleagues or online connections. Weekends mean exploring the Congtai ruins, day-tripping to Taihang Mountain, or taking the train somewhere bigger.
