Remote workers exist but are a small minority; this city runs on industrial output, not laptops in cafés. The job market for non-Chinese speakers outside of manufacturing roles is thin.

The expat community is small and skews heavily toward manufacturing professionals rather than lifestyle migrants; social life often means commuting to Guangzhou for anything resembling an international scene. Weekends involve temple visits, Lingnan water towns like Xiqiao, or simply eating well for very little money. This city suits manufacturing-sector expats on assignment who want low costs and don't need a large English-speaking social network.
