The urban economy runs on agricultural processing: grain milling, food manufacturing, and light industrial facilities. Automotive parts manufacturing has gained ground due to Changchun's proximity, with some suppliers operating in local industrial zones. For foreign workers, job prospects are essentially nonexistent unless you're placed here by a company — nobody relocates to Dehui for career opportunities.

Rent is genuinely cheap: a decent two-bedroom apartment runs roughly ¥800–1,200/month ($110–165 USD). Food and daily expenses are similarly low, with full meals available for under ¥15. Healthcare access is limited to county-level hospitals; anything serious means a trip to Changchun, 80km south. Mandarin is the only practical language — English proficiency is near zero, including at government offices. Bureaucratic processes for foreigners, from residence registration to banking, will require a Chinese-speaking intermediary at every step.

Winters are brutal and long, regularly hitting -20°C from December through February, with heavy snowfall and limited outdoor activity. Summers are warm and genuinely pleasant, with green farmland stretching in every direction. The food scene is honest Northeast Chinese cooking — hearty dumplings, braised pork, pickled vegetables — but restaurant variety is thin. There is no meaningful expat community here; you will likely be the only foreigner in most rooms. Dehui suits someone already embedded in a Chinese family or company assignment who wants low costs and doesn't need an international social life.
