Cixi is a mid-sized manufacturing city in Zhejiang Province, sitting in the economic corridor between Ningbo and Hangzhou. The local economy runs on hardware: electrical appliances, home goods, and components manufacturing dominate, with companies like Fotile and a dense network of small-to-medium factories providing most employment. White-collar remote workers and digital nomads are rare here — this is a production economy, not a services one. Foreigners who earn a living in Cixi are typically working in trade, quality control, or factory management for export-oriented businesses.

Rent for a decent two-bedroom apartment runs roughly ¥2,500–¥4,000/month ($350–$550), making it genuinely cheap by Chinese standards. Public transit is functional but limited compared to Ningbo or Hangzhou — you'll want a scooter or car. Healthcare access means the local Cixi People's Hospital for routine care, but anything serious sends you to Ningbo, 40 minutes away. Mandarin is non-negotiable here; English is nearly nonexistent outside of factory export departments. Winters are cold and damp, summers hot and humid — Zhejiang's climate is not subtle. The food scene is legitimately good: fresh seafood from Hangzhou Bay, strong Ningbo-style cuisine, and cheap local restaurants everywhere. The expat community is small and mostly trade-focused — don't expect a social scene built around coworking spaces or rooftop bars. Weekends mean day trips to Ningbo, hiking nearby hills, or exploring the canal towns of the region. Cixi suits factory-side professionals, sourcing agents, and anyone who wants low costs and doesn't need an international social bubble.
