Chongqing's economy runs on heavy industry, manufacturing, and an increasingly assertive tech and automotive sector — it's home to major car assembly plants (Ford, Changan, SAIC) and a growing cluster of electronics and logistics firms. The municipality of 32 million is one of China's fastest-growing inland economic zones, partly because of government-directed investment pushing development westward. For expats, teaching English remains the most accessible income path, while multinational manufacturing and supply chain roles exist but are shrinking as companies localize. Remote workers face the reality of China's internet restrictions daily.

A decent one-bedroom apartment in a central district like Jiefangbei or Shapingba runs ¥2,500–4,500/month ($350–620 USD). The metro system is extensive and cheap — most rides cost under ¥5. Healthcare at international clinics is available but limited compared to Beijing or Shanghai; expect to travel for specialist care. Mandarin is non-negotiable here: English signage is sparse outside tourist zones, and daily life without at least basic Chinese is genuinely exhausting. The VPN situation is a constant low-grade headache for anyone dependent on Google, Slack, or foreign banking apps.

Summers are brutally hot and humid — 38°C with thick haze is normal from July through August — and winters are damp and grey rather than cold, rarely dropping below 5°C. The food scene is legitimately excellent: spicy hotpot, street noodles, and night markets deliver serious quality for ¥20–50 a meal. The expat community is small and skews toward teachers and a handful of industry professionals; this is not a city with a large Western social infrastructure. Weekends mean hiking in the surrounding mountains, river cruises on the Yangtze, or eating your way through a new neighborhood. Chongqing suits people who want deep immersion in Chinese urban life, speak some Mandarin, and aren't dependent on expat amenities.
