Mining built this city and mining is slowly leaving it. Baiyin's economy was engineered in the 1950s around non-ferrous metal extraction — copper, zinc, selenium — and state-owned enterprises like Baiyin Non-ferrous Metals Group still dominate employment, though depleting ore reserves have forced an awkward pivot. Coal production in Pingchuan District and Huining County now carries more weight, alongside the Yinguang Group's chemical and defense manufacturing under Norinco. A high-tech park with contact lens production represents the diversification push, but the honest picture is a resource city in managed decline, not a growth market.

A one-bedroom apartment in the urban core runs roughly ¥800–1,200/month ($110–165 USD), which is genuinely cheap even by Chinese inland-city standards. Local healthcare exists but is basic — serious conditions mean a trip to Lanzhou, about 80km south, which is now faster via the Baiyinnan Railway Station opened in December 2022. Mandarin is the only practical language here; English is essentially nonexistent outside any academic context. Bureaucracy for foreign residents follows standard Chinese visa and residence permit processes, but with far less English-language support infrastructure than tier-1 or tier-2 cities. Expect friction.

The climate is punishing in its dryness — 110 to 352mm of rain annually against over 2,100mm of evaporation means cracked skin, dusty streets, and relentless wind. Winters are cold and summers are warm but arid. Local food leans heavily on Gansu staples: hand-pulled noodles, lamb, and flatbreads that are genuinely good and cost almost nothing. There is no meaningful expat community here — you would likely be one of very few foreigners in the city. Weekends mean day trips to Lanzhou or exploring the sparse Yellow River landscape nearby. This city suits someone employed by a specific local employer who prioritizes extreme cost savings over comfort or community.
