Why This Calculator Is Different

Income-first, not growth-first

Standard calculators answer "How much will my portfolio be worth in 20 years?" This one answers "How much will my portfolio pay me right now?" If you are building a high-yield portfolio with covered call ETFs and dividend funds, monthly income matters more than future value.

Per-fund tax treatment

Not all yield is taxed the same. SPYI and QQQI get 60/40 treatment under Section 1256. JEPI and JEPQ use ELN structure taxed as ordinary income. CLM returns part of your capital tax-deferred. This calculator models each fund differently.

Geoarbitrage comparison

Your portfolio income goes further in some cities than others. Select a target city to see if your income covers your cost of living there, and how reinvesting the surplus compounds over time. This is territory no other calculator covers.

CLM NAV erosion modeling

Closed-end funds like CLM and CRF pay high yields partly by returning your own capital. The NAV erosion slider lets you stress-test what happens if the fund's asset value declines over time while you reinvest distributions.

Not financial advice. Past performance does not guarantee future results. Consult a qualified financial advisor before making investment decisions. Read the full strategy guide: High Yield Investing for Early Retirement

FAQ

High Yield Investment Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions

Is this calculator accurate?
The calculator provides a projection based on your inputs. Fund yields are based on latest available data but can change. Tax treatment follows IRS rules for each fund structure. This is a planning tool, not financial advice.
What makes this different from a standard investment calculator?
Standard calculators show how much your portfolio will grow over time. This calculator shows how much income your portfolio pays you every month, after taxes. It models per-fund tax treatment for covered call ETFs like SPYI, CEFs like CLM, and dividend funds like SCHD.
What is Section 1256 and why does it matter?
Section 1256 is an IRS tax rule that applies to certain index option strategies. Funds like SPYI and QQQI qualify for 60% long-term and 40% short-term capital gains treatment, which can significantly reduce your tax bill compared to ordinary income rates.
Why does CLM need a NAV erosion assumption?
CLM and CRF pay very high distributions (18-20% yields). To sustain these payouts, the fund sometimes returns capital (ROC) which reduces the Net Asset Value (NAV) over time. The NAV erosion slider lets you stress-test this effect on your long-term returns.
How does geoarbitrage affect my investment income?
Geoarbitrage means earning in a strong currency while living in a lower-cost location. Your portfolio may produce the same $3,000/month whether you live in Chicago or Medellin, but in Medellin that income covers 100% of expenses with room to reinvest.
Can I save and share my results?
Yes. All calculator inputs are encoded in the URL as query parameters, so you can bookmark or share a link to your exact scenario. Results update live as you adjust any input with no page reload needed.
Are the fund yields up to date?
Yields are updated quarterly from fund prospectuses and distribution history. The lastUpdated field on each fund shows when it was last verified. Funds can change their distribution policies at any time.
Does this calculator consider dividend growth?
SCHD has a dividend growth rate of approximately 10% per year built into its projections. Other funds model current yields. The projection chart shows both gross and after-tax income trajectories over your chosen time horizon.
