Trade and logistics dominate the economic backbone here — Rasht sits at the intersection of Iran's north-south corridor and the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) linking Iran to Russia via the Caspian. Bandar-e Anzali, 40 kilometers away, handles meaningful commercial freight. Fishing, caviar processing, textiles, and food manufacturing employ a significant share of locals, and tourism generates real seasonal income given the Caspian beaches and mountain villages like Masouleh. For foreign workers, though, Iran's sanctions environment makes formal employment or banking as an expat functionally impossible under current conditions.

A one-bedroom in the city center runs around $250/month, which sounds attractive until you factor in the structural reality: foreign nationals face severe restrictions on opening bank accounts, transferring money internationally, or using global payment platforms due to SWIFT exclusion and U.S. sanctions. Healthcare infrastructure exists — Rasht has hospitals and specialists — but international health insurance is nearly unworkable here. Farsi is essential; English penetration is low outside universities. Bureaucracy for residency is opaque and slow, and the political environment adds a layer of unpredictability that no cost-of-living number can offset.

The climate genuinely sets Rasht apart from the rest of Iran — expect 1,400mm of annual rainfall, green hills, and mild summers rather than desert heat. The food scene earned UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy status in 2015 for good reason: Gilaki cuisine, fresh Caspian fish, and local herbs make eating here a legitimate draw. The expat community is essentially nonexistent in any organized sense. Weekends mean hiking toward Alborz villages, Caspian day trips, or the old bazaar. This city suits researchers, journalists, or dual-national Iranians reconnecting with roots — not lifestyle nomads expecting standard expat infrastructure.
