Tourism runs everything here. Denpasar is the administrative and commercial capital of Bali, and its economy lives or dies by hotel occupancy rates, restaurant covers, and airport passenger counts. The airport — one of Indonesia's busiest — funnels millions of visitors annually, and the hospitality sector is the dominant employer. Remote workers and digital nomads have carved out a real niche, particularly in the Sanur and Renon neighborhoods. Local Balinese businesses in trade and retail add texture, but if you're not in tourism, hospitality, or working online, your employment options are thin.

A one-bedroom in the city center runs around $600/month — high by Indonesian standards, and rising. Scooter rental is the practical reality; public buses exist but are slow and incomplete, and traffic congestion is genuinely bad during peak hours. Healthcare is adequate at private hospitals like BIMC and Kasih Ibu, which expats use regularly, but serious conditions mean a flight to Singapore or Bangkok. Bureaucracy for visas has improved with Indonesia's digital nomad visa (E33G), but it's still paperwork-heavy. Bahasa Indonesia is the working language; English gets you far in tourist zones, almost nowhere else.

Dry season (April–October) is legitimately excellent — low humidity, clear skies, 28–32°C. Wet season brings daily downpours and flooding in low-lying areas. The food scene is strong: warungs serving nasi campur for under $2, solid international restaurants, and fresh seafood markets. The expat community is large and transient — heavy on Australians, Europeans, and remote workers — which means easy socializing but shallow roots. Weekends mean beach clubs in Seminyak, temple ceremonies, or surfing day trips. This city suits location-independent workers who want Southeast Asian costs with decent infrastructure and don't mind trading authenticity for convenience.
