For expats, remote work or running an online business is the realistic path; local white-collar hiring outside engineering and manufacturing is thin, and multinationals are sparse compared to Chennai or Coimbatore.

A one-bedroom in the city center runs around $200/month, which is low even by Tamil Nadu standards — expect to pay $120–150 outside the center. Tamil is the dominant language and English fluency drops off sharply outside educated professional circles, making daily errands genuinely effortful at first. Government offices operate almost entirely in Tamil, so bureaucratic tasks like visa extensions or utility registration require either a local fixer or serious patience. Healthcare has private hospitals adequate for routine care, but complex cases typically get referred to Chennai, roughly 340 km away.

Temperatures regularly hit 38–40°C from March through June, and humidity compounds it — this is not a mild climate. The Eastern Ghats provide weekend hiking options, and Yercaud hill station is only 30 km away, which locals treat as a genuine escape valve. The food scene is strong on South Indian staples — idli, dosa, biryani — at very low prices, but international cuisine is nearly absent. The expat community is tiny and mostly consists of engineers at industrial facilities. This city suits location-independent workers who want ultra-low costs and don't mind being the only foreigner in the room.
