Steel and iron dominate here in a way that's hard to overstate — roughly 200 rolling mills, 195 sponge iron plants, and 6 major steel plants make Raipur one of Central India's most industrially dense cities. Add 800-plus rice mills and 500 agro-industries and you get an economy built almost entirely on manufacturing and commodity trade, not services or tech. Remote workers and digital nomads don't come here for the job market; local employment runs through industrial operations, government administration (Raipur is the state capital of Chhattisgarh), and trade logistics.

A one-bedroom in the city center runs around $240/month, which is genuinely low even by Indian standards. Local transport is auto-rickshaws and app-based cabs; there's no metro. Healthcare access is adequate at private hospitals like Ramkrishna Care and Apollo, but serious specialist care often means traveling to Nagpur or Hyderabad. Hindi is essential — English gets you through hotels and some clinics but almost nowhere else. Bureaucracy for visa extensions or business registration follows standard Indian government pace, meaning slow, paper-heavy, and occasionally opaque.

Summers are brutal and non-negotiable: temperatures regularly exceed 48°C (118°F) in April and May, and most people with options leave. The remaining eight months are manageable to pleasant. Food is a genuine strength — Chhattisgarhi cuisine, street chaat, and cheap thalis are excellent and cost almost nothing. The expat community is essentially nonexistent; you will not find co-working spaces, expat Facebook groups, or English-language social infrastructure. Weekends mean local markets, the Nandan Van zoo-park, or day trips to Sirpur's archaeological sites. This city suits industrial entrepreneurs, supply-chain professionals, or FIRE retirees who want extreme affordability and don't need an expat social scene.
