The IIT and IIM campuses generate a steady tech and consulting ecosystem, and the city functions as Madhya Pradesh's financial capital — meaning banking, insurance, and regional corporate offices are well represented. For foreign workers, opportunities are narrow: most expats here are either on corporate transfers, academic postings, or running location-independent businesses. The local job market is largely Hindi-language and relationship-driven.

A one-bedroom in the city center runs around $280/month, and you can find decent places in outer neighborhoods for $130–180. Auto-rickshaws and app-based cabs (Ola, Rapido) are cheap and functional, though traffic is genuinely chaotic. Private hospitals like Bombay Hospital and Choithram are competent and affordable by Western standards — a specialist consultation costs $5–15. The language barrier is real: English fluency drops off sharply outside professional and academic circles. Bureaucracy for visa extensions or business registration requires patience, local contacts, and ideally a Hindi-speaking fixer.

Indore sits at roughly 550 meters elevation, which softens the heat slightly compared to the plains — summers still hit 42°C, but winters are mild and pleasant from November through February. The food scene is legitimately exceptional: Sarafa Bazaar's night market and Chappan Dukan street are destinations in their own right, with poha-jalebi breakfasts that locals take seriously as a cultural institution. The expat community is small — a few hundred at most — concentrated around the IIM and corporate campuses, so social life means integrating locally or staying isolated. This city suits corporate transferees, academics, and remote workers who want low costs and don't need an English-speaking social bubble.
