Retirees on tiny fixed incomes who genuinely want rural South India and have already done a trial run in Tamil Nadu might make this work. That is a narrow slice of people. If you need reliable internet for client calls, if you cannot handle being the only foreigner in a 30-kilometer radius, if you want restaurants that serve anything other than rice and sambar, Cumbum will break you. The nearest airport is Coimbatore, 31 kilometers as the crow flies but closer to three hours by road. You come here because you have a specific reason: family ties, research, a monastic tolerance for isolation. Everyone else should look at Madurai or Coimbatore and visit Cumbum for the grapes.
