Évry's economy collapsed after the 1970s when Digital, Hewlett-Packard, and Alstom abandoned their headquarters—a direct result of Charles de Gaulle Airport's expansion killing Orly's dominance. The city tried reviving itself through the Agora shopping center (235 shops) and tax-exempt 'zones franches' for startups, but the Agora now has 29 vacant units, especially upstairs where rents are nearly double ground-floor rates. Most residents here work in Paris or nearby tech hubs; Évry itself offers limited employment beyond retail and municipal jobs.

Rent runs $1,300/month for a one-bedroom in the center—expensive for what you get, given the city's faded energy. The RER B train reaches Paris in 30 minutes, making it viable for commuters, though parking is tightly managed. Healthcare access is solid (standard French system), but French bureaucracy is French bureaucracy: residency permits, tax registration, and bank accounts require patience and documentation. English speakers are rare outside younger professionals; French fluency genuinely helps.

Winters are gray and damp; summers mild but unremarkable. Food is standard French suburban fare—decent bakeries, chain restaurants, nothing distinctive. The expat community is small and transient (mostly Paris workers sleeping here). Weekends mean heading into Paris or exploring the Seine valley; Évry itself offers the Cathedral of the Resurrection and modern civic architecture, but little spontaneous social life. This suits remote workers or Paris commuters seeking cheaper rent and quiet, not people seeking community or local character.
