Spain Supreme Court upholds voting rights suspension for Grandchildren's Law citizens

Spain's Supreme Court has maintained the suspension of voting rights for overseas voters who obtained nationality under the 2022 Democratic Memory law. The suspension will remain in force during the November 29th elections.

Thousands of people naturalised under the Grandchildren's Law may be excluded from voting, though the ruling does not apply to those who can prove they are children or grandchildren of Spaniards who suffered exile for political, ideological, belief, or sexual orientation reasons.

Who it affects: Overseas Spanish citizens who obtained nationality under the 2022 Democratic Memory (Grandchildren’s) Law, unless they can show they are children or grandchildren of Spaniards who went into exile.
