Dutch dual nationals abroad lose citizenship after 13 years without a valid document

The Netherlands automatically strips Dutch citizenship from dual nationals who live outside the Netherlands, the rest of the Kingdom, and the EU for 13 consecutive years without obtaining a new Dutch passport, ID card, or certificate of nationality. A qualifying document or a year of residence in the Kingdom or EU restarts the clock, and the loss runs by operation of law but can now be reviewed for proportionality after the fact.

Dual Dutch nationals living outside the EU should track the issue date of their Dutch documents and renew well before the deadline, since production takes months.

Who it affects: Adult Dutch citizens who also hold another nationality and live outside the EU and the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
