Logistics, manufacturing, and food processing dominate the local economy here. Zhenjiang's position on the Yangtze River and its Grand Canal connections make it a genuine freight hub, with port operations and supply chain companies employing a significant chunk of the workforce. The Hengshun Group — the company behind Chinkiang black vinegar, which ships globally — is the city's most recognizable employer and a point of local pride. Chemicals and machinery manufacturing round out the industrial base. For foreign workers, opportunities are almost entirely limited to English teaching; white-collar expat roles are rare.

A one-bedroom in the city center runs around $145/month, which is genuinely cheap even by Chinese standards — expect to pay more in nearby Nanjing for a fraction of the character. Local transit is functional but not extensive; most residents use e-bikes or ride-hailing apps. Public hospitals exist but quality varies, and most expats with serious health needs travel 45 minutes to Nanjing for better facilities. The language barrier is real and largely unmitigated — English proficiency is low across the city, and navigating bureaucracy, banking, or lease agreements without Mandarin or a local contact is genuinely painful.

Four distinct seasons mean hot, humid summers pushing 35°C and cold, damp winters around 2–5°C — neither extreme is comfortable without preparation. The food scene leans heavily on Jiangsu cuisine: braised pork, crab dishes, and that vinegar on everything. There's no meaningful expat social scene; the foreign community is small enough that you'll likely know every other non-Chinese resident within a month. Weekends mean hiking Jinshan or Beigu Mountain, exploring the old city canal district, or taking the 45-minute train to Nanjing for urban amenities. This city suits a Mandarin-speaking minimalist who wants ultra-low costs and doesn't need an expat bubble.
