Nanping, China
At 2.68 million residents, Nanping is a sizable prefecture-level city in China's southeastern Fujian province. The landscape is dominated by hills and mountains, with river valleys and small basins scattered throughout. However, the humid subtropical climate means long, sweltering summers and overcast, damp conditions for much of the year.
The city's industrial base is export-oriented, including the country's largest alkaline battery manufacturer. But bureaucracy is a persistent headache, with 16 high-speed rail stations spread across the prefecture's various districts and counties. Nanping may appeal to those drawn to its traditional Chinese aesthetic, but the climate and administrative hassles are significant tradeoffs.
This city is best suited for those able to tolerate the subtropical humidity and willing to navigate the region's fragmented transportation and governance.
