Ta'izz, YemenCapital City
Living in an active war zone is the harsh reality for 615,000 residents of this besieged Yemeni highland city. Located 1,400 meters above sea level, what was once Yemen's cultural capital has devolved into what locals now grimly call the "city of snipers." The ongoing civil war has devastated daily life, with most access roads controlled by Houthi rebels and basic goods in critically short supply.
Before the conflict, Ta'izz was known for its coffee production, cheese making, and diverse agriculture including mangos, pomegranates, and cereals. The city boasts significant historical architecture including the Al-Qahira Castle and multiple ancient mosques. However, much of this heritage has been damaged or destroyed by airstrikes and shelling since 2015. The security situation remains extremely volatile, with active front lines running through the city center and routine sniper fire making even short journeys potentially lethal.
