Golden Grove, Jamaica
This former sugar plantation in southeastern Jamaica has seen better days. With a population of just 3,057 as of 2009, the town of Golden Grove offers little to entice the average tourist - the 2000 travel guide bluntly described it as "rather shabby." While the town did once produce a bountiful 740 hogsheads of sugar annually, those prosperous times have long since passed. Today, the only remaining industry is the now-shuttered Golden Grove Sugar Factory, which closed its doors in 2019. For those willing to overlook the town's general disrepair, a path leads to the historic Morant Point lighthouse, but otherwise there's little to draw visitors. Golden Grove is best suited for the hardy few who can tolerate its persistent bureaucratic headaches.
