Al Hillah, IraqCapital City
Living costs in this ancient Iraqi city are deceptively low, but constant security concerns since the 2003 invasion make it a challenging posting for any westerner. Located 62 miles south of Baghdad on the Euphrates River, the city now houses roughly 455,700 residents amidst remnants of its illustrious past as a major center of Islamic scholarship.
Date palms and agricultural land surround the urban core, which sprawls outward from both riverbanks. While the Hilla canal supports extensive farming of crops, fruit and textiles, infrastructure remains strained after years of conflict. Major incidents included a devastating 2005 car bombing that killed 125 people, and a 2016 truck bomb that killed 60 - both stark reminders of ongoing volatility.
For expats, the city offers teaching positions at its five universities, including the main University of Babylon, and some UN/NGO work. However, the reality is that most foreign workers are confined to secured compounds, with limited movement. Housing prices are low but finding quality medical care remains a persistent challenge, despite the presence of four major government hospitals.
