Gujarat's industrial backbone runs straight through this city. Vadodara's economy is anchored in chemicals, petrochemicals (GAIL and IOCL have major facilities here), pharmaceuticals, textiles, and heavy engineering — this is manufacturing country, not startup country. Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda feeds a steady pipeline of engineers and researchers into local industry. Remote workers and digital nomads exist here, but they're outliers; the dominant earners are factory managers, engineers, academics, and traders embedded in Gujarat's deeply commercial culture.

A one-bedroom in the city center runs around $280/month; go 20 minutes out and you're closer to $150. Auto-rickshaws and city buses handle most daily transport cheaply, though owning a scooter makes life significantly easier. Private hospitals like Bhailal Amin General are competent and affordable by Western standards, but specialist care for complex conditions means traveling to Ahmedabad or Mumbai. Gujarati is the working language — English gets you through educated professional circles but fails you at government offices, local markets, and with landlords. Bureaucracy for visa extensions and rental agreements is genuinely slow and paper-heavy.

Summers are brutal — 42°C is normal in May, and the heat is dry and relentless until monsoon arrives in June. Winters from November to February are genuinely pleasant, around 15-25°C. The food scene is almost entirely vegetarian (Gujarat is one of India's most strictly veg states), which is either a feature or a dealbreaker depending on you. Vadodara has real cultural infrastructure — the Baroda Museum, Sayaji Baug, active classical music and fine arts scenes — but the expat community is tiny, mostly corporate assignees, not lifestyle migrants. This city suits engineers or researchers on assignment, or FIRE-seekers who want deep India immersion on a tight budget and can handle the heat.
